Great Board

Ha ha ha... So you've begun to cross the GREAT BOARD...
The halfway point to our castle. Hmm... impressive.

Lancer, Chapter 1

The Great Board (JP: 大盤面) is a Field sub-area in Card Kingdom, during Chapter 1 of Deltarune. It is composed of black and red squares in a checker pattern, with a width ranging from two to four squares. It is a relatively linear and minimalist path that leads to the Forest.

In the school's unused classroom, the Great Board is represented by a red-and-black checkerboard with chess and checker pieces strewn atop.

Main story

The party first enters the Great Board after leaving Field. After navigating through the light puzzle paths, the party discover Lancer at the halfway point.

Lancer applies Susie's advice and attempts to be intimidating. He acknowledges that the party is halfway to Card Castle, and threatens that his troops will smash the party into blood. Shortly after, Lancer unveils a bucket and laughs as lightning strikes.

Lancer asks for Susie's opinion and praises her in the process. Flattered, Susie compliments his progress, and Lancer is thankful for her feedback. In his excitement, Lancer realizes he forgot to summon his troops. Upon realizing the team does not have a name, Kris chooses from one of the three papers in Lancer's bucket.

At the end of the board, the party finds Lancer. He warns them of C. Round, who he is afraid to cross around. Ralsei greets C. Round, while Susie is in disbelief. At that moment, the C. Round moves back to final row of the Great Board, and is crowned into K. Round.

During the encounter, Ralsei tries to reason with Susie, and Kris tries to command her. Instead, Susie goes by her own logic and FIGHTs instead, as she assumes that will knock the crown off. However, this results in K. Round healing and becoming stronger. Regardless, Susie continues to FIGHT to emphasize she is not intimidated.

After the party defeats K. Round by ACTing, it reverts into a C. Round and rolls away. Susie is surprised that they won. Lancer is thankful and praises the party. However, Ralsei gently admonishes Susie. Ralsei points out that Susie's decisions were disruptive. He also lists other options Susie did, such as consuming Top Chef's BrokenCake. Ralsei reminds Susie that she is a hero, and asks her to start acting as one.

Susie pauses and considers Ralsei's words. After deliberating, Susie claims she will not be a "rotten hero", and that she will be a villain instead. Susie and Lancer begin scheming before departing. Ralsei wonders if he has been too hard on Susie, but then acknowledges that she will probably turn around in due time. Kris and Ralsei then leave the Great Board.

Sublocations

Entrance to light path puzzle 2

At the entrance point, a blue sign can be found. It informs that stepping on the white lights causes the party to be teleported to the starting point of the room.

The entrance path's white light puzzle goes from top to bottom of the board, then repeats its cycle.

In the next room is a primarily a two-rowed, zig-zag like patterned path. It is possible to outrun the pursuing Ponman via the CONFIRM button.

At the halfway point, the party finds Lancer and he attempts to be menacing. In the process, he also brings a bucket to clean up any potential mess. However, Lancer forgot his troops, and realizes the party does not have team name. Lancer lets Kris choose the team name, as he assumes Kris does not care.

The three papers to choose from lead to the following team name:

  • Ralsei's Neat paper: The Fun Gang
  • Susie's Crumpled paper: The $!$? Squad
  • LANCER labelled paper: The Lancer Fan Club

If Ralsei's paper is selected, Susie comments that Ralsei's team name is too long, then suggests "The Fun Gang" as a simplified version.

If Susie's paper was chosen, Lancer is hesitant to mention the name out loud. Ralsei refuses the mention the name as well. Selecting Susie's paper also causes her Crudeness to become 101 in the Power stats menu.

The Lancer paper has the name written on both the inside and outside. Susie becomes confused that Kris picked the name. Lancer realizes that "LANCER" as a party name would not work, and suggests "Lancer Fan Club" instead.

After Kris chooses a new team name, Lancer takes the bucket and flees further into the Great Board. Shortly after, a SAVE Point appears, which lists the chosen name.[1] The chosen team name is mentioned again in Chapter 4.

Diagonal light puzzle to end board

The next room consists of a three-tiled path. The light paths for this area primarily go in a diagonal pattern, excluding the beginning and end of the path puzzle.

The second Ponmen path is a jagged, single-tiled path. Up to five Ponmen chase the party as they are bypassed.

Mr. Elegance and Mr. Society near the SAVE Point

Near the end, Mr. Elegance and Mr. Society are in between the second SAVE Point of the Great Board. Interacting with Mr. Elegance reveals that there was once a boss for the board, and it was during a peaceful time prior to King's reign. He explains that the aforementioned boss became King's peon.[2]

At the end of the board, C. Round appears and walks to the right side, causing it to be crowned and become K. Round.

Trivia

  • The Great Board is used by both checkers and chess pieces, but only white chess pieces and red checkers are seen there.
  • Arriving at the farthest row of a checkerboard allows a checker to be "kinged". However, C. Round moved in a straight line to arrive at the edge of the board, a move legal for several pieces in chess but not in checkers.
  • The Great Board has an unused theme. Toby Fox explained that he thought giving the area its own music would raise expectations for it too much.[3]
