Sans, Chapter 2

sans. is the 42nd track of the DELTARUNE Chapter 2 OST. It plays in Sans's grocery store in Hometown.

This track is lifted directly from Undertale, where it plays during interactions with Sans.

Creation and development

The track predates Undertale's development. Created as a homage to In and Out Crowd from Sesame Street,[1] it appears as background music for a Homestuck-related project as early as October 2012, as muscles. This track was used as background music for Undertale's Kickstarter video, along with some others.

sans., Nyeh Heh Heh!, Bonetrousle, and Heartache were originally going to be used for an RPG idea Toby Fox had based on a dream. That project never came to fruition, but the idea later evolved into Deltarune.[2]

The track was originally composed for a gym in Card Castle where Rudinns were going to be working out with one of them saying that "the brain is the strongest muscle of all".[3]

Trivia

  • sans. is currently the only track in the DELTARUNE Soundtrack to be reused entirely from Undertale itself without modification.
    • While Before the Story was used for an Undertale-themed PS4 theme and appears on the Undertale Complete OST vinyl set, it plays nowhere in Undertale itself.
    • Determination also briefly plays in Deltarune, as part of Chapter 2's easter egg where the Annoying Dog hits Kris with a car. However, it is not included in the soundtrack, and is cut down to a very short portion, even within the game files.
    • In Chapters 3 and 4, Live Report, Confession, Fallen Down, Thundersnail, His Theme, and Tem Shop are all used to varying degrees (Confession, Thundersnail, and Tem Shop play in full, the others are cut short). However, none of these are included in the soundtrack, again leaving sans. as the only song in the soundtrack to be directly lifted from Undertale.
  • sans. is the only track in the soundtrack that has a title beginning with a lowercase letter.

  2. This song wasn't made for Undertale either. It (and bonetrousle) were the main battle themes of an RPG game I was working on before Undertale, based off a dream I had. However, I didn't plan it very well, so the project fell apart before I accomplished a single room. "Sans" was also a song in the game called "Muscles," and "Heartache" was a song called "Joker Battle." Anyway, I always mess up playing this song on the piano, so if you can't play it, it's not a big deal. Since it's Papyrus, it's OK as long as you try your best. March 08, 2024.
