Difficulty also known as the special variable is a hidden mechanic in Deltarune. It alters attacks to different, usually harder versions of themself and is usually used when a boss goes into a phase, but it can be used for normal enemies.

Attacks affected by difficulty

These are attacks that are affected by difficulty.

Chapter 1

Lancer (Card Castle) Spade Rain (self.turns*2) Lancer after turn 3 uses the formula: (self.turns*2), which gradually makes him spawn less spades that avoid the SOUL.

Chapter 2

Spamton NEO Flying Heads 2 (unused), 3, 7 (unused) Difficulty 2 makes Spamton shoot out massive lasers.

Difficulty 3 makes the heads come from multiple directions, while Spamton fires shots from his arm cannon. Difficulty 7 makes the Spamton heads do a circle before shooting.

Spamton NEO Spam Mail 1, 2 (unused), 3 (unused), 4 (unused) Difficulty 1 makes the trucks go faster and more frequently.

Difficulty 2 makes many more trucks and Spamton heads spawn, as well as spawning unused red Spamton heads that destroy surrounding columns when shot. Difficulty 3 spawns the trucks in the same way as difficulty 2, but without the red heads. Difficulty 4 spawns empty columns with no heads, making it impossible to dodge.

Spamton NEO A Heart Attack 1, 2, 3 (unused), 4 (unused) Difficulty 1 adds two smaller hearts along with the main heart, these smaller hearts shoot a line of diamonds towards the SOUL.

Difficulty 2 makes the heart move back and forth more rapidly, and shoot more frequently and with an increased angle deviation. Difficulty 3 adds two biters that shoot lasers. Difficulty 4 adds two bombs that if shot, explode and release many diamonds, these diamonds are accidentally fired at Spamton instead of at the SOUL, due to a bug.

Spamton NEO Heart and Hands 1, 2 Difficulty 1 makes Spamton shoot shots out of his arm cannon.

Difficulty 2 makes flying heads spawn, in addition to the arm cannon shots from difficulty 1.

Spamton NEO Arrow Elevator 2, 3 Difficulty 2 spawns an electric orb that moves back and forth.

Difficulty 3 spawns many electric orbs going up or down, and now two arm cannons can fire at the same time.

Spamton NEO Crusher Walls 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Difficulty 2 makes the walls not get destroyed after defeating a Spamton head, instead leaving a small space where the head was.

Difficulty 3 makes the walls have guns attached to them which shoot bullets occasionally. Difficulty 4 makes the walls not get destroyed after defeating a Spamton head, instead leaving a small space where the head was, the walls also move up and down and stop in place when the Spamton head is defeated. Difficulty 5 spawns three walls that take knock back from shots. Difficulty 6

Spamton NEO Pipis Spam Mail 1, 2, 3, 4 Difficulty 1 makes the trucks go faster and more frequently.

Queen Berdly Wire Attack 3 Does nothing.
Lanino and Elnina Lanino and Elnina Fireballs 1, 2, 3, 4 Instead of firing fireballs scarcely and unaimed, the attack will fire raindrops, ice crystals, moons or suns in more consistent streams in a similar way to their default attack but sideways. All difficulty levels do the same thing.
Moonwarmer Moon Rain 1 The moons are bigger and fall slower.
Knight Falling Swords 1, 2 Difficulty 1 reduces the size of the bullet board, causes more swords to spawn and makes 2 big swords fall at end instead of 1.

Difficulty 2 makes 1 sword fall and then traps the player in an empty attack for 277 hours (999999 frames).

Miscellaneous Susie Photo 1 Makes the attack do a burst of axes separated by a longer delay.
Miscellaneous Dual Rainballs 1, 2 Difficulty 1 makes the two rainballs to wobble left and right.

Difficulty 2 makes the droplets spin around the balls.
