I CAN DO ANYTHING!!

Jevil, Chapter 1

Jevil (JP: ジェビル) is a Darkner in Deltarune. He is the former court jester of Card Kingdom's King and the Shadow Crystal boss of Chapter 1. Due to Jevil's sudden change of perspective, he was locked away on a hidden floor in Card Castle.

Once defeated, the party earns the Jevilstail or Devilsknife, depending if they choose to ACT or FIGHT respectively.

Profile

Appearance

Jevil's head bouncing around after being attacked

Jevil is a short, pudgy imp with a gray round face and pointed ears. His face has black vertical lines across his eyes, which have black sclerae and small yellow pupils. Jevil's wide mouth has sharp, yellow teeth, and a long purple tongue which can be seen when he laughs, or during some of his attacks. His head appears to be connected to his body via a coil spring, akin to a jack-in-the-box, which is only exposed when attacked. Lastly, Jevil has a purple tail, with its end split. It is usually curled, making it resemble the capital letter J.

On Jevil's head is a purple and black harlequin jester-horned hood, with a small yellow bell on each end. Around his neck is a lime green and yellow jester's collar and a black cape; the colors of Jevil's collar are shared with Kris's shirt in the Light World. For his body, Jevil wears a black-sleeved, purple shirt with black triangle patterns on the center and stripes on the side, purple mittens, black trousers and green slippers.

Jevil, like some of the other Card Kingdom denizens, is implied to be a playing card in the Light World. Jevil can transform into the Devilsknife,[2] and Susie calls the Devilsknife's Light World counterpart a "weird card" during Chapter 4's church sermon. His position as the court jester implies that he is the Joker card; this is also evidenced by his claims that he can do anything, as the Joker's most frequent use is a wild card. Additionally, his attacks uses a mix of suit-type attacks, similar to how a Joker can be used as any card of any suit.

Personality

Prior to losing his mind, Jevil is implied to have had a humorous attitude[3] and was on par on playing games with his companion, Seam.[4]

Following his descent into madness, Jevil retains his eccentricity and vitality. He has a sadistic sense of entertainment, perceiving an encounter with the party as a "GAME", which is seemingly the reason he was locked away. However, Jevil also has a cynical worldview, as he considers everyone else trapped instead.[5]

Speech pattern

Jevil speaks exclusively in all uppercase letters, and regularly repeats words twice, a linguistic practice known as "reduplication". Among his most frequent repetitions are "CHAOS, CHAOS" and "FREE, FREE". His speech patterns come off as manic and dramatic, and his sentences have a strange cadence to them. Jevil also verbalizes crying noises such as "BOO HOO" to further dramatize his dialogue. Possibly owing to his previous position as the court jester, Jevil's sentences occasionally rhyme.[6] He often laughs, using multiple unique sound effects, and his written dialogue often writes his laugh out as "UEE" or "UEE HEE HEE".

According to Toby Fox, Jevil's peculiar way of speaking was intended to emulate the poetically stilted syntax of localized RPGs.[7]

Jevil is one of the only characters in Deltarune to have proper voice acting. He says "CHAOS, CHAOS", "I CAN DO ANYTHING", and "METAMORPHOSIS!" for normal attacks, and "BYE-BYE!" and "THE TRUE AND NEO CHAOS!"[8] before his "FINAL CHAOS".

Etymology

Jevil's name is likely a portmanteau of "joker" and/or "jester", and "devil" and/or "evil".

Main story

History

Some time before Kris and Susie entered the Dark World, Jevil worked as the court jester alongside Seam, who worked as the court magician. One day, however, Jevil came across a "strange someone", and his personality shifted permanently.[9] According to Seam, Jevil "started saying bizarre things that didn't completely make sense - But didn't completely not make sense, either." Jevil managed to convince King that the Knight, and the Dark Fountain it would create, could help him rise to power.[10] Eventually, Jevil started viewing the world as a game, and everyone else as its participants. Because of this, Seam was forced by King and the three Former Kings to lock Jevil away underneath Card Castle.[5][11]

Chapter 1

When spoken to for the first time, Jevil explains that while it appears he is locked in a cell, he is the only person who is actually free while everyone else is locked away. However, he goes on to mention that he has grown lonely and that he wishes for more people to be "FREE" with him. He instructs the party to find the key to open his door, noting that the "OLD SHOPKEEPER", Seam, knows "A SECRET".

Broken Keys

To get the key to Jevil's cell, the party heads out to collect the three Broken Keys (A, B, and C).

In Seam's Shop in Field, Seam hands over Broken Key A after Kris mentions Jevil, and also hints towards the location of the Broken Key B. "Walk where the stars don't shine."

In Forest, the party finds Broken Key B in a chest in the Scissor Dancer room. The chest is visible on the southeast side, but can only be accessed through a secret dark path. The dark path can be found in the southwest corner of the area, at the middle of the south edge of the square. After crossing the path, the party can encounter three Rabbicks before reaching the chest.

Northeast of Field's shortcut door is the card suit puzzle, which is near the entrance to the Great Board. The combination is the order of the shaped doors of the main floors in Card Castle. It starts from the bottom and always contains non-violent enemies, excluding Spade. This order is Diamond, Heart, Club, Spade. After the spikes retract, Kris can find a chest that contains Broken Key C.

After retrieving the three, Kris takes them to Malius, who combines the parts into a single Door Key. The smith then warns the party of the terrible energy the key holds and advises them not to use it. After Kris uses the key on Jevil's cell, a smaller door materializes and opens. He then invites the party to enter. Jevil waits at the far right of the area, and wants to "PLAY" a "SIMPLE NUMBERS GAME". He continues, "WHEN YOUR HP DROPS TO 0, YOU LOSE!" before engaging the party in combat.

After defeat

Once defeated, Jevil obliquely warns the party of future events before transforming into a Devilsknife and granting an item to the party. The item Jevil grants the party, along with the dialogue he delivers, depends on the method by which he was defeated:

  • If Jevil is defeated via Ralsei's Pacify spell, he proclaims that he will sleep for "THE OTHER 100 YEARS", and that "A NIGHTMARE WILL AWAKEN IN [their] HEARTS. IN THE SHADOW OF THE KNIGHT'S HAND." He questions the party's ability to stop it, before giving them the Jevilstail armor.
  • If Jevil is defeated by FIGHTing, he prophesies Queen's appearance in Chapter 2, the Roaring, and that "THE HAND OF THE KNIGHT IS DRIFTING FORWARD." He warns the party that there are Darkners stronger than him. Jevil ends this speech by exclaiming, "TAKE ME AND DO YOUR STRONGEST---!" and gives them the Devilsknife weapon.

If Kris's 48 weapon or armor inventory is full, a chest containing the item appears outside Jevil's cell. Jevil does not comment on the lack of space.[12]

Chapter 2

In Chapter 2, Jevil is alluded to several times, primarily by Spamton. In his shop, Spamton admits he intends to surpass "THAT DAMNED [[Clown Around Town!]]", implying he may view Jevil as a rival. One of Spamton NEO's neutral dialogues is also, "[Clown]!? NO!!! I FEEL SICK!!!"

When backtracking to Cyber City after reaching Queen's Mansion, a city Werewire before the first crossing mentions that they repeatedly petitioned for a public merry-go-round, but "some ex-famous guy" of a "salesman-lobbyist-type" stopped it from being built because he was afraid of clowns.[13][14]

Inside Queen's Mansion, Tasque Manager becomes angered if Devilsknife or Jevilstail is equipped to any party member. She favors order, and insists they get rid of the offending item.[15]

Chapter 3

While Jevil does not make a direct appearance in Chapter 3, if the Jevilstail is equipped to any party member, Susie's "Bet20" S-Action during the fight against Tenna is changed to "Bet30". It is described as the "JOKER's bet" and plays Jevil's laughter when used, suggesting that he may be assisting with the ACT.

Chapter 4

If King is spoken to at Castle Town, he remarks that it was Jevil who told him about the Knight.

Creation and development

Jevil artwork kanotynes.png
Jevil's original design by kanotynes

Jevil, along with Lancer, Rudinn, Hathy, Clover, King and the uncredited King of Diamonds, were designed by kanotynes.[16] He is likely based off of the Joker from a standard 52-card deck. The card itself can add randomness and confusion to a game, and Jevil's character is likely a reference to it. Tracks in the music folder of Deltarune refer to his music as prejoker and joker.

The Joker card also does not have a suit and is presumably why Jevil is not "locked" to a specific suit to use in battle, and it is often used as a wild card (a card that can have any value, suit, color) in games like Rummy, which is likely why Jevil uses attacks based on all suits. Jevil's imprisonment could also be a reference to how the Joker card is excluded from the deck in many card games, similarly to how Jevil is hidden away from the rest of the Card Kingdom.

Jevil's voice clips are based on the "Joker" character from Fighters Destiny.[17] The carousel from the battle arena background is a picture of a Galloper Carousel from The Hoppings, a traveling fair from Newcastle upon Tyne,[18] and is a two-dimensional optical illusion.[19]

Before Deltarune was announced, Toby Fox stated that Toriel's battle theme in Undertale, Heartache, was originally composed under the title of "Joker Battle" for an unused RPG idea.[20] Since this RPG idea was later revived as Deltarune, it is rather likely that Heartache was originally intended to be used as Jevil's battle theme, given his multiple allusions to the Joker card. In the final game, Jevil's theme, THE WORLD REVOLVING, is an original composition.

There is unused Recruit info in the game's code for Jevil, suggesting that he may have been intended to appear as a Recruit if he was defeated in Chapter 1, but the idea was scrapped during development.[21]

Spamton Sweepstakes

During the Spamton Sweepstakes event, Spamton again implies he has known Jevil in the past during Spamton's Q&A, becoming furious at a question that came attached with a picture of Jevil.[22]

Newsletter

In ISSUE 5 - Winter 2024 of the Newsletter, three random Valentine's Day cards were included in the email version of the Newsletter. Jevil has a single super rare Valentines card. Jevil encourages the recipient to play an encounter with him, with him showing his bullet attacks.[23] This card references his battle.

Undertale

In the Xbox version of Undertale, Jevil is depicted on the unlockable Border from the Dog Casino. He is featured as a Joker card.

In battle

Attacks

The attacks Jevil uses depends on how much HP he has left, or how tired he is. See Strategy. Jevil has 5 phases:

  • Phase 1: The initial phase.
  • Phase 2: Jevil's Tiredness must be at least 2 or his HP must be 2800 or lower (80%).
  • Phase 3: Jevil's Tiredness must be at least 4 or his HP must be 2100 or lower (60%).
  • Phase 4: Jevil's Tiredness must be at least 6 or his HP must be 1400 or lower (40%).
  • Phase 5: Automatically entered after Phase 4's final attack.

If Jevil's HP is reduced to 525 or lower (15%), he immediately skips to the "fakeout attack" just before his "Final Chaos".

All phases
  • The first time Jevil uses attacks in these phases, he uses them in order, and always says a particular voiceline before the attack. After exhausting the unique attacks of a phase (except Phase 4), if Jevil is not advanced to the next phase, he reuses attacks from that phase randomly.
Phase 1
Jevil attack Chaos Chaos.gif
Jevil's "Five-Spade" attack
  • Turn 1: Five-Spade attack. Jevil teleports randomly from the left and right of the bullet board and spews volleys of five spade bullets at the SOUL's position. The spades spread further from each other as they travel.
Jevil attack Ring Around.gif
Jevil's "Spiral" attack
  • Turn 2: Spiral attack. Ten large spade bullets appear around the bullet board in a circle and quickly start bounding, one after the other, in a spiral pattern, towards the center of the bullet board and beyond. They move toward the middle either clockwise or counterclockwise. The direction of the spiral remains the same throughout the attack in earlier phases, but can shift later in the fight. It is possible to dodge this attack by waiting in the space of the board between any two spades, causing all of them to miss.
Jevil attack heart.png
Jevil's "Heart" attack
  • Turn 3: Heart attack. Bombs with hearts in the center quickly fall to the level of the bullet board and detonate into four hearts in a square formation rotating at the center point, which fly towards the SOUL and go beyond.
  • Turn 4: Four scythes oscillate around the center of the bullet board while rotating in either direction.
Phase 2
  • Turn 1: Rows of horses fly across the arena from the left to the right as if they were textures on a 3D cylinder. They all bob up and down according to a pattern, and their path skews up and down over time. This can be almost dodged by holding the left arrow key, while sticking to the bottom-left corner of the board. However, this only works the first time the attack shows up each Jevil battle. Only the bodies (not the heads) have hitboxes.
  • Turn 2: Bombs with clubs in the center quickly fall to the level of the bullet board and explode into club bullets, which aim at the SOUL in a 3-way spread pattern and go beyond the board. This continues until the attack ends.
  • Turn 3: Diamonds rapidly spawn from the bottom of the screen in random locations and fly upwards - essentially a sped-up version of one of Rudinn's attacks.
  • Turn 4: Spade bullets circle the screen and attack just as in phase 1. However, this attack lasts slightly longer, the spades move slightly faster, the SOUL's movement speed increases, and the spiral may change direction at random.
Phase 3
  • Turn 1: Just like the carousel attack from phase 2, except there are both horses and ducks, and their path does not skew. There are still only 3 rows of them, yet the horses and ducks go up and down at opposite intervals to each other. Rarely, one of the ducks may appear with Everyman's head.
Everyman attack ducks.png
Jevil's "Carousel" attack, with a duck in the middle appearing with Everyman's head
  • Turn 2: Bombs with spades in the center fall quickly to the level of the bullet board and explode into 10 spade bullets that together shoot out evenly in all directions.
  • Turn 3: Clubs appear around the edges of the screen, shooting 3 individual 3-way spread bursts of bullets aimed at the SOUL. The three bursts aim and fire at the place where the SOUL was, so there appears to be a small amount of spread as they fly towards the SOUL. This is, in essence, a sped-up version of one of Clover's attacks.
  • Turn 4: Four scythes oscillate around the center of the board, just as in phase 1, but this time, a larger red scythe appears either near the top of the board or the bottom, and fly horizontally across the screen, damaging the target if they are hit by it. It randomly starts at either top or bottom. It always alternates which side it is on, so if it starts at the top, the order is "top, bottom, top". It appears 4 times, but can only hit the SOUL the first 3 times before the attack ends.
Phase 4
  • Turn 1: Jevil teleports to random spots in the areas to the left and right of the bullet board, much quicker than the Phase 1 attack, and throws one diamond bullet aimed at the SOUL that advances linearly and goes beyond the board.
    • After this attack, combat flavor text changes to "CHAOS BOMB was prepared FOR YOU".
  • Turn 2: Every previous version of the suit bombs (hearts, spades, clubs) spawns randomly, as well as a diamond bomb, which fires 3 diamond bullets aimed at the SOUL, each one slightly slower than the previous, forming a straight line.
  • Turn 3: Jevil pretends to look tired, and attacks with a much slower version of the diamond attack from phase 2, where diamonds spawn from below the arena and fly up. These diamonds give a very large amount of TP.
    • Combat flavor text changes to "Something terrible is coming...!"
  • Turn 4: The arena grows to fill the whole screen. Giant versions of the Devilsknife fall from the top of the screen, dealing damage if touched. When they touch the ground, they create a pillar of white light that may also damage the party members. These Devilsknives appear randomly along the screen until the party members survive long enough, then a set pattern falls going from the edges of the screen in, then another falls dead-center, followed by some more around the edges, and a final giant Devilsknife that fills the screen falls from the sky and ends the attack. This final Devilsknife can easily be avoided by staying away, since it cannot go all the way down.
Phase 5
  • Jevil's sprite appears to move around so rapidly it leaves behind motion blur. Repeats various attacks from all phases (with Chaos Bomb being 3× more likely to be picked). He uses the default dialogue lines for the rest of the battle.
  • At the start of each of his turns in Phase 5, Jevil's Attack increases by 0.5 (up to a maximum of 11) and his Defense decreases by 3 if it is above -10.

Strategy

Pre-battle, armor such as White Ribbon, Dice Brace, and IronShackle can be equipped, with Amber Card filling any other party member's slots. Ralsei can also be equipped with DaintyScarf to improve his healing.

The 12 inventory slots can be filled with HP-healing consumables, with the Top Cake/SpinCake, ClubsSandwich, and ReviveMints being ideal to bring to heal the party at once or revive one of them when they are Downed.

The rest of the inventory can be filled with Darkburgers, Choco Diamonds and Hearts Donuts, which are the best items for Ralsei, Kris and Susie respectively. Discarding Ralsei's Manual or the Glowshard to bring an additional healing item is optional, but can be done if an extra inventory slot is really needed.

In battle, Jevil has five phases which change based on his Tiredness or HP. See Attacks for phases. When Jevil attacks, voice audio clips are also used. All of Jevil's attacks have a large number of projectiles that are fast-moving and/or have complex trajectories. This makes it difficult to have a free turn to use Ralsei's Heal Prayer spell.

Kris also has two ACTs available versus Jevil:

  • Pirouette: costs 20% TP and only uses Kris's turn. It adds 0.5 to Jevil's Tiredness, and has a "random" effect dependent on which turn it is. See: pirouette rotation.
  • Hypnosis: costs 50% TP and uses the entire party's turn. It adds 1 to Jevil's Tiredness, reduces his Attack by 0.5 if it is above 10, and decreases his Attack by 30% for this turn.

Jevil can be defeated via making him Tired or FIGHTing.

To defeat by sparing

The party must make Jevil tired so Ralsei can cast his Pacify spell. If Jevil is tired, this will display as usual in the battle menu (like any other enemy).

Jevil will become tired if his Tiredness is at least 9. (This Tiredness number is not visible to the player.)

One strategy can involve Kris continually using Pirouette, while Susie and Ralsei are mainly set to DEFEND. This grants 16% TP per DEFENDing party member, and reduces damage. This is a fair bit easier than defeating Jevil through violence.

If the player is optimal, then casting Pacify can be done before the end of Phase 4. If the player has to spend turns healing instead of using ACTs, then Jevil's Tiredness won't reach 9 until later (sometime in Phase 5).

As a special rule, Jevil will automatically become Tired even if his Tiredness isn't 9 yet, if it is Phase 5 and turn 30 or later.[24] This turn requirement decreases by 1 for each level of Tiredness (rounded down). This means that it is possible to FIGHT Jevil down to 40% HP remaining, then wait 18 turns (or fewer if FIGHTing took too long), then cast Pacify without using any ACTs.[25]

To defeat by fighting

TP gain from FIGHTing is reduced to 2/3rds of normal; so a critical attack via only grants 4% TP. Thus, DEFENDing and Grazing Jevil's attacks is crucial to gain TP. Weapons such as Spookysword, Brave Ax, and Ragger can be equipped to improve damage. Based on the turn, Kris's ACTs can also be considered to affect Jevil or heal the party.

Pirouette rotation

Kris's Pirouette ACT requires 20% TP. It is turn-based and rotates indefinitely in a set order.

Turn no. Flavor text Effect
1 What! It was just foley! No combat effects, and a random sound effect plays.

Note that Pirouette cannot be used on the first turn of the battle due to starting with no TP.

2 JEVIL felt at ease! JEVIL's defense dropped! Lowers Jevil's defense by 4 unless already below -16.
3 Awkward! Upcoming attack will hurt rapidly! 60% fewer invincibility frames for this turn.
4 Tranquil! The dance defended the party! Decreases Jevil's Attack by 30% for this turn
5 What! It's nothing but a useless bird! No combat effects. A bird flies across the screen.
6 It felt comforting! 25-55 HP heal to a random party member.
7 Everyone's HP got jumbled up! Party members' HP bars are shuffled. (Each party member takes on the current and max HP of the party member to their left or right, including the color of their HP bar.) Then, each fallen party member has their negative HP split among all three party members (with rounding) and are then revived with 1 HP. Then, any party members that still have negative HP (due to the splitting) are revived with 1 HP.

Using this effect 2 or more times can cause a party member to receive their regular HP bar back. At the end of the battle, all HP bars return to normal.

8 JEVIL'S upcoming move got powered up! Increases Jevil's Attack by 25% for this turn.
9 A perfect 10! 36-50 HP heal to all party members.

Trivia

  • The line "HOW CAN YOU REFUSE, WHEN YOU ARE ALREADY PLAYING...?" may be a reference to the line "HOW DO YOU EXPECT TO OUTRUN ME. WHEN I AM ALREADY HERE?" spoken by the character Lord English from Homestuck, a webcomic series which Toby Fox has made music for.
  • The line "WHEN YOUR HP DROPS TO 0, YOU LOSE!" may be a reference to Undertale's controls/instructions screen, which ends with the similar phrase "When HP is 0, you lose."
  • While there are several other uses of voice acting in Deltarune, Jevil and Jackenstein's pumpkin's voice lines remain the only instance of audio being redubbed in Japanese. Other voices either go entirely untranslated (which is the case for most voice clips) or have on-screen subtitles, as is the case with Don't Forget and Feature Presentation.
  • The lines "I CAN DO ANYTHING!" and "METAMORPHOSIS!" are possible references to Loose Clown, a virtual sticker set that can be purchased from the LINE store.[27]
  • The line "THESE CURTAINS ARE REALLY ON FIRE!" is likely a reference to the term "curtain fire", an alternative name for the "bullet hell" sub-genre of shoot 'em ups, of which many attack patterns in both Undertale and Deltarune are reminiscent of and often compared to.
  • The text for Susie's Hypnosis action, "Susie spun something around!", is likely a reference to various enemies such as the Urban Zombie or the Mad Duck in EarthBound, which have an attack described as "<Enemy> made something spin around!"
